Simi Valley, CA, November 13, 2008 -
Waste Management encourages all Ventura County residents to renew their commitment to recycling and take the America Recycles Day (ARD) pledge on November 15. ARD began in 1997 and is the only nationally recognized day dedicated to encourage Americans to recycle and buy-recycled products. Throughout the years, residents in every state of the nation participated in the ARD campaign and pledged to increase their recycling habits at home and work.
Waste Management currently has recycling programs throughout communities in Ventura County that we can all participate in. The Simi Valley Landfill & Recycling Center opened a new construction and demolition facility in February 2008 and as of October, over 33,000 tons of constructions materials were recycled and diverted from the landfill.
Materials collected at the WM facility include wood, concrete, dirt, drywall, metal, cardboard, plastic, roofing materials, carpet, appliances and tile. These materials are sorted and transported to regional facilities to find a “second life” as new products.
WM provides residential customers with a recycling cart for materials such as newspaper, cardboard, aluminum and plastics, and a green waste cart for grass clippings, branches and leaves. Commercial business customers can implement a co-mingled recycling program for weekly recycling services.
“We’ve made a commitment to our customers to be sustainable and responsible recyclers every day through the work we do in their communities, and we hope our customers will use America Recycles Day as an opportunity to resolve to recycle now and in the future,” said Mike Smith, Market Area General Manager for Waste Management in Ventura County.
While many items are recycled back into the same item, a number of materials can be recycled and used in making new products:
What goes in your recycling cart…
- Aluminum & Plastic beverage contaianers
- Steel and aluminum cans
- Glass bottles and containers
- Newspaper
- Printer/copier paper
What comes out
- Fiber fill for ski jackets, rugs, park benches, fences, goggles, tote bags
- New aluminum and plastic beverage containers
- New cars, bikes, appliances, cookware
- Marbles, tiles, surfboards
- New newsprint, egg cartons, paperboard
- Stationery, newsprint, paper for magazines/books
“We encourage everyone to take the opportunity on November 15 to do something for the environment for America Recycles Day,” said Lisa Hemenway, Community Relations Manager. “Whether it’s helping with a recycling project in your community, purchasing products made from recycled materials or simply making sure you place your recyclable items in the recycling cart, it’s important that we all make a commitment to be responsible recyclers.”
