WASTE MANAGEMENT INVITES SIMI VALLEY RESIDENTS TO FINAL FREE DAY EVENT OF THE YEAR
Simi Valley, October 12, 2009 - Waste Management is once again inviting residents to drop off greenwaste, trash or bulky items free of charge at the Simi Valley Landfill and Recycling Center on October 18 from 10 am - 4 pm. Goodwill will also be on site collecting gently used items and electronic waste for donation.
"Now is a good time for Simi Valley residents to take advantage of the last free day of the year, said Mike Smith, Director of Operations for Waste Management. "We are proud to provide our customers with a safe and convenient location to dispose of unwanted items, while continuing our efforts to help reduce illegal dumping activity in Ventura County."
Residents can bring non-hazardous, residential trash, green waste and construction and demolition materials for recycling. Household hazardous waste will not be accepted. For a complete list of acceptable and non-acceptable items, visit http://www.keepingventuracountyclean.com/materials.html.
Goodwill will be accepting gently used items and electronic waste, including televisions, computers, and monitors. For a complete list of Goodwill's wish list, visit http://goodwillvsb.org/donatetogoodwill/donationguidelines.html.
"With the holiday season and end of 2009 fast approaching, now is an excellent opportunity to make a tax-deductible donation," Smith said. "Not only will this event help local residents rid themselves of unwanted trash, it will also help other residents in need of a helping hand - and we are proud to be a part of that."
To help minimize delays, Waste Management requests that visits to the landfill follow these guidelines:
- Be ready with valid identification to show proof of residency to cashier.
- All loads must be tarped pursuant to California State Law.
- All loads are subject to inspection.
- All commercial vehicles are subject to applicable rates unless prior arrangements have been made.
To encourage recycling efforts and reduce the amount of waste entering the landfill, designated areas and containers will be available for easy recycling. There will be separate unloading areas for concrete, asphalt, greenwaste, and construction and demolition waste. Containers will be available to drop-off and recycle metal items, paper and cardboard.
Waste Management provides Ventura County with recycling, trash hauling and solid waste disposal through G.I. Industries and the Simi Valley Landfill and Recycling Center. Waste Management has owned and operated G.I. Industries since 1998 and the SVLRC site since 1983 and employs more than 230 people in Ventura County. The SVLRC provides approximately 60% of Ventura County's daily refuse disposal needs. The company operates a “green power” program at the site that generates enough power for 2,500 homes, and clean-burning LNG powers 38 of its trucks. Waste Management is a significant contributor to area community groups. For more information visit our website www.keepingventuracountyclean.com. # # #
