Press Release

ANNUAL FREE RESIDENTIAL DAY EVENT SET FOR THOUSAND OAKS & MOORPARK RESIDENTS
Simi Valley Landfill and Recycling Center free day scheduled for September 20th

Simi Valley, September 9, 2009 - Thousand Oaks and Moorpark city residents are invited to drop off their extra trash and bulky items free of charge and donate "gently used" items at the Simi Valley Landfill and Recycling Center (SVLRC) on Sunday, September 20, 2009.

Goodwill Industries of Ventura and Santa Barbara Counties will be onsite accepting gently used items and electronic waste at the free day event.

"Given the challenging economy, this is a great time for residents to take advantage of a free service and keep some of the green stuff in their pockets", said Mike Smith, Director of Operations for Waste Management.

Thousand Oaks residents can bring items from 7:00 am - 1:00 pm and Moorpark from 9:00 am - 3:00 pm. Materials accepted at the SVLRC include non-hazardous, residential trash, greenwaste and construction and demolition materials for recycling. Household hazardous waste will not be accepted. Please visit http://www.keepingventuracountyclean.com/materials.html for a full list of non-acceptable items and information where these items can be properly disposed.

Goodwill will be accepting unwanted electronic waste, including televisions, computers, and monitors at this event. For a complete list of Goodwill's wish list, please visit http://goodwillvsb.org/donatetogoodwill/donationguidelines.html.

To help minimize delays, Waste Management requests that visits to the landfill follow these guidelines:

  • Be ready with valid identification to show proof of residency to cashier.
  • All loads must be tarped pursuant to California State Law.
  • All loads are subject to inspection.
  • All commercial vehicles are subject to applicable rates unless prior arrangements have been made.

"Now that summer is almost over and kids are back in school, this is a great time to clean out the garage", said Mike Smith, Director of Operations for WM of Ventura County. "WM is proud to provide residents a safe and convenient location to drop off unwanted items and the ability to donate to Goodwill".

To encourage recycling efforts and reduce the amount of waste entering the landfill, designated areas and containers will be available for easy recycling. There will be separate unloading areas for concrete, asphalt, greenwaste, and construction and demolition waste. Containers will be available to drop-off and recycle metal items, paper and cardboard.

The last event scheduled for 2009 is for Simi Valley residents on October 18th. The Simi Valley Landfill and Recycling Center is located at 2801 Madera Road in Simi Valley.
