WASTE MANAGEMENT AND GOODWILL INDUSTRIES TEAM UP TO SUPPORT MOORPARK RESIDENTS DURING TOUGH ECONOMIC TIMES AT MOORPARK FREE RESIDENTIAL DAY
Moorpark Residents Invited to Residential Free Day at Simi Valley Landfill and Recycling Center Goodwill Industries Accepting Donations for Local Store

SIMI VALLEY, Calif., April 11, 2009 - Moorpark residents are invited to drop off their extra trash and bulky items free of charge and donate "gently used" items at the Simi Valley Landfill and Recycling Center on Sunday, April 19 during the first of three residential free days this spring.

For the first time, the Simi Valley Landfill and Recycling Center has partnered with Goodwill Industries of Ventura and Santa Barbara Counties and will accept gently used items at the free day event.

"WM is always looking for opportunities to reduce the amount waste that enters the landfill and partnering with Goodwill means that we're also helping local residents during these tough economic times," said Lisa Hemenway, Community Relations Manager for Waste Management of Ventura.

The Moorpark free day will begin at 10 a.m. and ends at 4 p.m. Residents can bring non-hazardous, residential trash and greenwaste items. Certain items, including televisions, electronics, and household hazardous waste will not be accepted. Please visit http://www.keepingventuracountyclean.com/materials.html or a full list of non-acceptable items and information where these items can be properly disposed.

"We applaud Waste Management for partnering with us to support local residents and keep re-useable materials out the landfill," said Bryan Haneiwich, Director of Operations and Retail Services for Goodwill Industries of Ventura and Santa Barbara, Inc. "Donations will be sold at local Goodwill stores to help support job training and placement programs."

In May, residents will have an opportunity to drop off gently used items at the new Goodwill Donation Center located at 476 Los Angeles Ave in Moorpark.

To help minimize delays, Waste Management requests that visits to the landfill follow these guidelines:

  • Be ready with valid identification to show proof of residency to cashier.
  • All loads must be tarped pursuant to California State Law.
  • All loads are subject to inspection.
  • All commercial vehicles are subject to applicable rates unless prior arrangements have been made.
"The Residential Free Days at the Simi Valley Landfill and Recycling Center is a great way to keep your house and the local environment clean," said Mike Smith, Director of Operations for WM of Ventura County. "By providing residents with a safe and free disposal option for unwanted items, we are helping to fight illegal dumping and protecting Ventura County's natural resources."

To encourage recycling efforts and reduce the amount of waste entering the landfill, designated areas and containers will be available for easy recycling. There will be separate unloading areas for concrete, asphalt, greenwaste, and construction and demolition waste. Containers will be available to drop-off and recycle metal items, paper and cardboard.

The next round of spring events are the Simi Valley Free Residential Day on Sunday, May 17 from 10 am to 4 pm and the Thousand Oaks Free Residential Day event on Saturday, May 16 at Conejo Creek Park-South (Janss Rd & 23 Hwy) from 8 am to 3 pm. The Simi Valley Landfill and Recycling Center is located at 2801 Madera Road in Simi Valley.
