Our renewable energy projects create enough energy to power nearly 1 million homes and save the equivalent of more than 13 million barrels of oil per year.
The Simi Landfill and Recycling Center alone powers the equivalent of 2,500 homes each day with two landfill gas-to-energy generators using methane gas.
WM's North American operations recycled and carboard enough paper in one year to save 41 million trees.
In California, we operate the largest fleet of clean natural gas collection vehicles and have reduced air emissions by 247 tons.

Free Days Help Keep Communities Clean
The free residential days Waste Management provides for local residents always have a great turnout. This fall, over 1,900 residents from the cities of Simi Valley, Moorpark and Thousand Oaks participated in the event, bringing close to 1,500 tons of refuse and recyclables. Of the material that was received, about 33 percent was recycled and diverted from the Simi Valley Landfill.
Waste Management provides residents two free disposal days — one in the spring and another in the fall — at Waste Management’s facility each year. With this year’s events completed, Waste Management has announced the dates for the 2009 disposal days — happening in the spring and fall:
