Our renewable energy projects create enough energy to power nearly 1 million homes and save the equivalent of more than 14 million barrels of oil per year.
The Simi Landfill and Recycling Center alone powers the equivalent of 2,500 homes each day with two landfill gas-to-energy generators using methane gas.
WM's North American operations recycled enough paper in one year to save 41 million trees.
In California, we operate the largest fleet of clean natural gas collection vehicles and have reduced air emissions by 247 tons.

Dear Friends,
We are proud to operate a state-of-the-art landfill that protects the surrounding environment, and one important aspect of our mission is to continue to look for innovative solutions to environmental challenges. A perfect example of this is our pioneering seagull abatement program, which uses falcons to naturally scare away seagulls. The program was recently profiled in this article from American Public Media, which produces radio programs such as Marketplace and Weekend America.
In addition to the falcon program, last year we also installed eight owl boxes and five raptor perches on our site to keep rodents away. Local Boy Scouts and an avian expert helped us to design and implement the program. These efforts contributed to the Simi Valley Landfill and Recycling Center earning certification from the Wildlife Habitat Council.
Finally, with the holidays fast approaching, we wanted to highlight some ways you can put some green into your celebrations this holiday season. One of the first ways is to recycle your Christmas tree for free from Dec. 26 through January 12.
And if you've ever wondered what happens to your tree or your other
greenwaste recycling, make sure you read our primer on greenwaste
recycling.
If you're interested in learning more about our
programs or in taking a tour of the landfill, please don't hesitate to
contact Scott Tignac at 805-579-7478.
From all of us at Waste Management/G.I. Industries, happy holidays!
Best,
Michael E. Smith
