Our renewable energy projects create enough energy to power nearly 1 million homes and save the equivalent of more than 14 million barrels of oil per year.
The Simi Landfill and Recycling Center alone powers the equivalent of 2,500 homes each day with two landfill gas-to-energy generators using methane gas.
WM's North American operations recycled enough paper in one year to save 41 million trees.
In California, we operate the largest fleet of clean natural gas collection vehicles and have reduced air emissions by 247 tons.

Greening the Holidays
Along with holiday festivities comes a lot of extra trash. Here are some tips from Waste Management of Ventura County to help make your holidays a little bit greener this season.
- Consider giving no-waste gifts, such as music or sports lessons, memberships to a gym, symphony or museum, favors like babysitting or tickets to a sporting event or concert.
- When packaging gifts, consider reduced or no-waste wrapping options. For example, put a large, reusable bow on the gift and place the gift in a reusable bag.
- Make your own wrapping paper by using pages from the newspaper or magazines, decorating paper shopping bags or cutting pieces from maps or posters. Fabric purchased by the yard makes excellent re-usable wrapping paper. Recycled-content wrapping paper is also available. Save bags and bows to use on future gifts.
- Recycle your Christmas tree. Trees will be picked up on your regularly scheduled service day free of charge between Dec. 26 and Jan. 12. Cut your tree in half and place it in your greenwaste container. Please remove all stands, ornaments and tinsel.
- Make a New Year's Resolution to be a little more green in 2008
