Our renewable energy projects create enough energy to power nearly 1 million homes and save the equivalent of more than 14 million barrels of oil per year.
The Simi Landfill and Recycling Center alone powers the equivalent of 2,500 homes each day with two landfill gas-to-energy generators using methane gas.
WM's North American operations recycled enough paper in one year to save 41 million trees.
In California, we operate the largest fleet of clean natural gas collection vehicles and have reduced air emissions by 247 tons.

A Natural Solution
At Waste Management, we're committed to operating a state-of-the-art landfill that protects the surrounding environment. We look for innovative and sustainable techniques to keep the Simi Valley Landfill and Recycling Center's operations environmentally neutral. Recently, our seagull abatement program at SVLRC was profiled by American Public Media, which produces national radio programs such as Marketplace and Weekend America.
We are very proud of this abatement program as it is a program that we started, and that has since been adopted around Los Angeles and the country. The trained falcons are a natural and effective solution to the seagull problem. If you're interested in learning more, photos and a video of the falcons in action are available on American Public Media's website at: http://sustainability.publicradio.org/articles/hawks/.
