  • Dear Friends,

The holiday season is always our busiest – Americans throw away 25% more trash between Thanksgiving and New Years than during the rest of the year. As always, we urge you to toss responsibly: Recycle as much as possible and think about using as many reusable goods as you can. We are proud sponsors of Freecycle.org, an international grassroots organization that puts people who have items to give away in touch with people who would like those items. It‘s the ultimate “White Elephant” party.

As we reflect upon the past year, we have much to be proud of. Our employee-community engagement with the communities we serve is stronger than ever. In April, we gathered to participate in the Arroyo clean-up day, and we hosted the Ventura County Boy Scout’s “Camporee” on the Simi Valley Landfill’s property, which brought in over 1,000 scouts. In September, we provided a helping hand at Special Kids Day. In October, we were proud to announce our partnership with Casa Pacifica to help ensure that all children receive the best chance at life.

This summer, we were actively involved with the Boy Scouts in environment awareness. Scout John Casselberry Jr. and fellow members of Boy Scout Troop 662 set up owl boxes and as part of John’s Eagle Scout Project to help reduce the rodent population at the Simi Valley Landfill and provide better habitat for owls in the area.

During this holiday season, we would like to give thanks for the many blessings in our lives, the lives of our employees, their families and the communities we serve. Please join us in taking a moment to assist those that may need a helping hand. If you would like to give back to the Simi Valley community this holiday season, we suggest donating to or volunteering at the following local non-profit organizations:
    • Casa Pacifica, Camarillo, CA: Casa Pacifica offers residential treatment, emergency shelter care, assessments, educational programs, family support, medical services, psychiatric/psychological treatment, and a variety of community-based interventions to is dedicated to abused, neglected or severely emotionally disturbed children and adolescents.
    • Simi Valley Community Association:
The Simi Valley Community Foundation provides financial assistance to a range of non-profit organizations in Simi Valley.
All of us here at Waste Management/G.I. Industries and the Simi Valley Landfill and Recycling Center wish you and your loved ones a healthy and happy holiday season, and a wonderful 2007.

    Best wishes,

    Michael E. Smith
    Market Area Manager
