Latter Day Saints Come Marching to Alamos Canyon

Over 1200 members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints recently spent the weekend camping in Alamos Canyon to celebrate the 200th birthday of Joseph Smith, the founder of the church.

As part of the celebration, the members of the church re-enacted the journey of the handcart companies that left Winter Quarters in Missouri headed for Salt Lake City, Utah.

Members of the church re-enacted the trek by using a three-mile trail around Alamos Canyon, pulling their handcarts, which were loaded with food and their personal belongings. Even though it was only three miles the members of the church got a chance to relive what it must have been like for the pioneers to make their long trek from Winter Quarters to Salt Lake Norman Barlow, Stake President for the Simi Valley Stake, said, “ It was wonderful that Waste Management District Manager Scott Tignac provided the Church the opportunity to use Waste Management’s property to bring the members of the Simi Valley Stake together to experience the Handcart Journey. We really appreciate Waste Management being a good partner with the community,”
