Keeping Our Communities Clean

Our renewable energy projects create enough energy to power nearly 1 million homes and save the equivalent of more than 13 million barrels of oil per year.

The Simi Landfill and Recycling Center alone powers the equivalent of 2,500 homes each day with two landfill gas-to-energy generators using methane gas

Waste Management's landfills provide more than 24,000 acres of protected habitat for wildlife. The Simi Valley Landfill is one of 73 certified sites by the Wildlife Habitat Council.

WM's North American operations recycled enough paper and cardboard in one year to save 41 million trees.

In California, we operate the largest fleet of clean natural gas collection vehicles and have reduced air emissions by 247 tons.

Letter from Mike Smith

Dear Friends,

It seems the fall season is creeping upon us so quickly. Can you believe we are getting close to the holidays?

During this season, WM has been highlighted in our local media about our future plans at the Simi Valley Landfill. We have engaged in great discussions from residents and businesses. It is community involvement and input that helps us to create a great project. We ask that you get the facts and visit our facility for an up-close look.

Green Energy

When organic materials, like food and yard waste, decompose, they create a gas comprised of about 55 percent methane. Wells placed throughout the landfill collect this gas and then transport it to a renewable energy facility, where it is used to fuel generators. In fact, the green energy produced eliminates the burning of 7,795 tons of coal per year.
