Gabriel Zacarias, WM Scholarship Winner
Gabriel Zacarias, son of Santa Maria WM driver Santiago Zacarias is attending Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania this fall and WM is going along with him through our Scholarship Program for WM employee kids. Swarthmore, considered one of the “Little Ivy League Schools” is one of the most difficult schools in the country to get into. Gabe will be the first generation of the Zacarias family to graduate from college. His father Santiago, known as Zack by fellow employees, has been a member Waste Management's staff since 1982 and was nominated for the Santa Maria top driver award this year. Waste Management has awarded Gabe one of our Corporate General Scholarships.
Gabe is such an impressive young man, that it is no surprise that schools like Swarthmore offered him scholarships to attend. In addition to excelling academically, Gabe has always been a big believer in community service, aiding numerous organizations and charities throughout his high school career. He assisted with the Rio Benin Help Program raising funds for health clinics in Bolivia, giving him the chance to tour Bolivia for two weeks visiting clinics and learning how the money he helped raise was used. He is also a member of the Future Leaders of America and became president of his county's chapter. Finally, Gabe always lends a helping hand during the local Toys for Tots annual gift packing day.
After Swarthmore, Gabe hopes to attend Yale University for graduate school to study law. Ultimately, Gabe's goal is to become a judge and to promote social justice in all aspects of life.
We know that we will be hearing about his achievements in the next few years.
