Boy Scout Jamboree
Recently we hosted hundreds of Boy Scouts from our local Simoroaks District on a back portion of the Simi Valley Landfill, in the Alamos Canyon. Local scouts and their leaders held their annual Camporee weekend working on skills and merit badges, while enjoying the true Boy Scout spirit by sleeping in the great outdoors.
The Simoroaks District covers the eastern portion of Ventura County. The Camporee allows all the different units in the Simoroaks District to come together and experience the comradeship of fellow scouts. There were twenty different events in which the Scouts competed as individuals and as teams to work on different skills, including a Dutch Oven Cook-off over an open fire. After cooking over an open flame, much as early settlers did, the boys were doubly appreciative of the microwaves, stovetops and electric ovens that awaited them back home.
Ron Coons, Simoroaks District Chair thanked us for our support; “The boys had a wonderful time and WM was very supportive in letting the Scouts use their property for this event. ” Mr. Coons went on to thank District Manager Scott Tignac for all his help in preparing the site for the Camporee.
Scott, who spent much of his teen years working cattle on the Alamos Canyon property, was glad to host the event and see the enthusiasm of the Scouts as they transformed the canyon into a campground.
