Boy Scout Jamboree

Recently we hosted hundreds of Boy Scouts from our local Simoroaks District on a back portion of the Simi Valley Landfill, in the Alamos Canyon. Local scouts and their leaders held their annual Camporee weekend working on skills and merit badges, while enjoying the true Boy Scout spirit by sleeping in the great outdoors. READ MORE >



Free Dump Days

Waste Management provides residents of Simi Valley, Thousand Oaks and Moorpark, including adjacent unincorporated areas, with two “free days” a year. Residents can dispose of all their extra trash and bulky items free of charge. The free disposal event is held at the Simi Valley Landfill and Recycling Center located at 2801 Madera Road in Simi Valley, except where noted on the schedule below. READ MORE >



Gabriel Zacarias,
WM Scholarship Winner

Gabriel Zacarias, son of Santa Maria WM driver Santiago Zacarias is attending Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania this fall and WM is going along with him through our Scholarship Program for WM employee kids. Swarthmore, considered one of the “Little Ivy League Schools” is one of the most difficult schools in the country to get into. Gabe will be the first generation of the Zacarias family to graduate from college. His father Santiago, known as Zack by fellow employees, has been a member Waste Management's staff since 1982 and was nominated for the Santa Maria top driver award this year. In Partnership with WM

Waste Management (WM) and Freecycle have joined forces in the first-ever corporate sponsorship for Freecycle. WM's sponsorship will help to expand the Freecycle network and promote personal giving with employees and customers alike. WM In the News

Our very successful efforts to improve emissions on our fleet of trucks have been in the news lately. In 2005, Waste Management/ GI Industries reduced more than 50 tons per year of harmful air emissions from its fleet of garbage and recycling trucks, beating the California Air Resources Board (ARB) early deadline for reducing diesel emissions. Electronic waste now represents almost 5% of the waste stream, and it’s continuing to grow. This is a problem that has developed in just the last 20 years and has quickly reached crisis levels due to the rapid rate of obsolescence of electronic devices - in many cases after only 2 to 3 years. People are finding that their TVs and computers can be replaced far more cheaply than they can be upgraded. READ MORE >
