Waste Management - GI Industries - Keeping Our Communities Clean

Waste Management, combined with its wholly owned subsidiary Recycle America (WMRA), is North America’s largest recycler, recycling enough paper last year to save more than 41 million trees.

By recycling more than 57,000 tons of steel cans, WM reduces greenhouse gasses equivalent to taking more than 21,000 cars off the road each year.

Waste Management’s landfills provide more than 17,000 acres of protected habitat for wildlife, and 15 are certified by the Wildlife Habitat Council.

By processing 21 million pounds of e-scrap, WM keeps 313,000 monitors/TVs and 175,000 CPU hard drives from being disposed in landfills.

On the Environmental Cutting Edge

It’s no secret that California is usually on the cutting-edge of environmental initiatives. And at Waste Management, we’re especially proud of our environmental stewardship in the state. Our efforts extend internally with our membership in the California Climate Action Registry, a nonprofit organization set up to help organizations conducting business in the state to voluntarily register their greenhouse gas emissions. And externally, with our early support of California’s Global Warming Solutions Act of 2006 (AB 32) which calls for a 25 percent reduction in greenhouse gases by 2020.

WM is already well on our way to reducing greenhouse gas emissions. We currently operate the largest fleet of natural-gas garbage and recycling trucks in the nation. Through an innovative emissions trading project with PG&E, we replaced 120 diesel garbage trucks with new natural-gas vehicles. This move eliminated 2.7 tons per year of particulate emissions, and more than 1,200 tons of greenhouse gases. We are also proud that WM is California's largest recycler of solid waste, and we are one of North America’s largest producers of renewable energy generated from waste.
