Disposal of Sharps & Household Prescriptions

It is important that prescription medications generated by households are disposed of in a safe manner to ensure that we do not contaminate our ground water supply or harm children or pets.

Flushing your household medications down the drain can lead to contamination of ground water, because wastewater treatment facilities cannot neutralize the active ingredients in prescription medications.

One option is to dispose of unwanted medications in your trash. Double enclose the contained medicine in a bag or any other waste container to prevent immediate identification of a drug container. Please ensure that the medication is sealed and placed within your trash to ensure that it cannot fall out and come in contact with children or pets.

Sharps Disposal

Improperly discarded syringes, hypodermic needles, lancets and other “sharps” can cause serious injury to your families and create health and safety hazards in our community. Until now, the 8 million Americans who self-inject a variety of prescription medicines had few options available for proper disposal of their used sharps.

Waste Management has a cost-effective solution for the residents of Ventura County. The Sharps Disposal by Mail® system can eliminate risk by providing you with a sharps container and a government-approved postage pre-paid mail back box to return the sharps to a proper disposal facility.
