SIMI VALLEY LANDFILL & RECYCLING CENTER
Modernization & Expansion Update

Dear Friends,

On May 17, the Ventura County Board of Supervisors will consider Waste Management's Simi Valley Landfill and Recycling Center (SVLRC) Modernization and Expansion Project.

The Board's action on the Modernization and Expansion Project will be one of the most important decisions they will make this year.

Did you know that without the SVLRC Modernization and Expansion, Ventura County will not have a place to dispose of trash after the year 2027? This will result in higher disposal fees and as responsible citizens, we cannot let this happen.

The SVLRC Modernization and Expansion project will ensure that Ventura County's residents will have an on-going safe, secure and regularly monitored landfill to meet their needs well beyond the year 2050. Further immediate and long-term community benefits of the project include:

  • Adding 150 new permanent good paying local jobs, with benefits, for decades to come
  • Creating additional indirect jobs such as 100 construction jobs over four years
  • Improving recycling options and increases environmentally-friendly programs
  • Building a convenient Environmental Collection Center for unwanted items, including, batteries, paint, oil, and electronic waste
  • Reducing traffic on the Madera Corridor by moving local trucking operations to landfill
  • Creating and protecting over 500 acres of open space and wildlife habitats
  • Increasing production of enough green energy - by safely transforming methane gas from waste to electricity - to power 6,250 local homes
  • Establishing one of the first green building LEED facilities at a landfill in the county by using recycled and sustainable building materials, energy-efficient lighting, green energy programs and recycled water
  • Providing charitable contributions including annual sponsorships, service donations and employee volunteer support

Waste Management has been serving the people of Ventura County for over four decades. We are committed to do our part to ensure that our neighbors, our environment, and our economy are robustly healthy.

Ventura County will continue to grow in the future. If we want it to grow well and to continue to be such an incredible place to live and work, we need our elected officials to make smart decisions now. Approval of the SVLRC Modernization and Expansion project is a smart decision that they have the opportunity to make on May 17th.

Please let your Supervisor know that you want him or her to:

Approve the SVLRC Modernization and Expansion Project.
