Our renewable energy projects create enough energy to power nearly 1 million homes and save the equivalent of more than 14 million barrels of oil per year.

The Simi Landfill and Recycling Center alone powers the equivalent of 2,500 homes each day with two landfill gas-to-energy generators using methane gas.

WM's North American operations recycled enough paper in one year to save 41 million trees.

In California, we operate the largest fleet of clean natural gas collection vehicles and have reduced air emissions by 247 tons.

Project Update: Notice of Preparation

The Ventura County Planning Department recently issued a notice of preparation for the modernization and expansion of the Simi Valley Landfill and Recycling Center.

The NOP officially lets the community and other responsible agencies know that an environmental impact report will be prepared for WM’s project. The planning department is the lead agency for the project and has the discretion to determine how an EIR should be prepared.

Other governmental agencies involved in reviewing the project include the California Department of Fish and Game, the county environmental health division and the watershed protection district of the county public works agency. These and other agencies will provide guidance in their areas of expertise to help the planning department review and evaluate all aspects of the project.

We have always been in strong support of a complete EIR and now that the process is underway, we will be holding more meetings with the community to gather input and suggestions for the proposed project. The county planning department also will be holding a scoping meeting for the EIR; details will be announced soon. The county also recently put together a tentative timetable for the project, which provides a good overview of the various phases.
