Wildlife Habitat Council Certification
‘Think Green, Think Waste Management’ is more than just a tag line to us. It's the attitude we take as stewards of the environment. We're proud of the positive difference we are making in communities across North America through relationships such as the one we enjoy with the Wildlife Habitat Council.
The Wildlife Habitat Council was formed in 1988 when the founders conceived a new and innovative concept of bringing together conservation and business. This was the first cooperative effort between the environmental community and industry.
Today, with its members and partners, they continue to share a vision to conserve and restore natural ecosystems for the benefit of humanity and the earth’s biological diversity. WHC helps large landowners, particularly corporations, manage their unused lands in an ecologically sensitive manner for the benefit of wildlife. More than 2 million acres in 48 states, Puerto Rico, and 16 other countries are managed for wildlife through WHC-assisted projects.
Habitat enhancement at the Simi Valley Landfill and Recycling Center includes:
- Restoring Venturan coastal sage scrub habitat;
- Controlling invasive vegetation;
- Managing for the coastal California gnatcatcher;
- Designing stormwater basins for wildlife; and
- Creating “pollinator” gardens that provide opportunities for butterflies and hummingbirds to move pollen from one plant to another.
In cooperation with the Wildlife Habitat Council (WHC), Waste Management demonstrates an ongoing commitment to protecting and preserving the environment for future generations by connecting people and communities through the creation of wildlife habitat programs on our properties.
