VENTURA BOARD OF SUPERVISORS APPROVES CONSULTANT FOR MODERNIZATION AND EXPANSION PROJECT AT LANDFILL
Supervisors Award Contract for Completion of Environmental Impact Report
Simi Valley, CA, May 20, 2008 - This morning, the Ventura County Board of Supervisors approved a contract to Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC) for completion of an environmental impact report for the Simi Valley Landfill and Recycling Center. The EIR is for the proposed modernization and expansion of the Waste Management facility.
Waste Management has proposed several modernization and improvement measures for the Simi Valley Landfill and Recycling Center, including expanding green energy programs and increasing the facility's recycling capabilities. SAIC will conduct research and analysis to advise the community, the County and WM about elements of WM’s plan that need to be analyzed and addressed. The initial draft EIR will be circulated to the public and residents of Ventura County will be encouraged to review it and provide comments and feedback.
"We are pleased that the County is moving forward with the selection of an outside consultant to complete a full environmental impact report for our proposed project," said Mike Smith, Market Area General Manager for Waste Management of Ventura County. "We look forward to working with SAIC and getting input about the project so we can implement our modernization and expansion in a way that really works for residents and businesses in the area."
More information about WM's proposed project is available online at www.keepingventuracountyclean.com. Local residents also are encouraged to contact Scott Tignac, SVLRC District Manager, at (805) 579-7478 to arrange for a tour of the facility.
Waste Management provides Ventura County with recycling, trash hauling and solid waste disposal through G.I. Industries and the Simi Valley Landfill and Recycling Center. Waste Management has owned and operated G.I. Industries since 1998 and the SVLRC site since 1983 and employs more than 230 people in Ventura County. The SVLRC provides approximately 60% of Ventura County's daily refuse disposal needs. The company operates a “green power” program at the site that generates enough power for 2,500 homes, and clean-burning LNG powers 38 of its trucks. Waste Management is a significant contributor to area community groups. For more information visit our website www.keepingventuracountyclean.com.
